The experience of spiritual awakening goes hand in hand with a profound restructuring of the human brain. Since the 1950s, progressive neuroscience has shown that in average people, the survival centers of the brain are chronically overactive while the higher brain centers, including the frontal lobes, septum pellucidum and the frontal part of the amygdala are chronically underactive. Increased activity in these higher brain centers allows us to experience unconditional love, a sense of oneness with all that is and the presence of the Divine. 

Our lifestyle can be an important resource to help our spiritual awakening. How we live and especially what we eat is registered by the brain as either life supporting or life diminishing. If we continue to eat nutrient-deprived foods that commonly dominate modern diets, the survival centers in our brain register this as a threat to our survival. This alerts the survival brain and is likely to increase the production of stress hormones. The body also has to work overtime to adapt and be able to survive and function despite the lack of nutrients. If we want our survival brain to relax from its conditioning of overactivity, it is counterproductive to live on a deficient diet, since survival stress in one area of life translates into higher survival stress in general.
In other words, if we give our brain reasons to believe life is threatened with a diet that is indeed threatening to our well-being, it will react in more stressfull ways to other aspects of life, like emotional challenges. If we take good care of our physical health, the survival centers of the brain can more easily give way to an awakening beyond the confines of survival consciousness into oneness.

Of course the subject of diet is a confusing one, given the huge amount of contradicting information available on the subject today. Let`s look for a moment at the reason why there can be so many completely different approaches to diet that seem to work for some people.
If you are stranded in the desert with your car, dehydration can become a problem quickly. After a while, when you begin to really suffer the effects of dehydration, you might remember that there is water in the cooler of your car. You drink it and it saves your life. In this situation, drinking the water from the cooler of your car is improving your health – dehydration would kill you much faster than the chemicals in the water. If you are dehydrated enough, water that you would usually stay away from becomes a healthier alternative than not drinking water. Now if you go back home and begin to market cooler water as the new miracle nutrient (“new – with extra anti-freeze!”), there would be some misunderstanding. Sure, you might be able to come up with testimonials and even some research showing that cooler water has saved some people`s lives. But just because it is possible to be so dehydrated that even toxic, chemical-laden water from the cooler of a car is healthier than not drinking water does not make this into a healthy beverage.

Most people on the nutrient depleted, highly toxic Standard American Diet (SAD – interesting acronym) are so starved for nutrients that almost any diet or supplement that is a little more nutritious compared to SAD will perhaps yield some positive results. But just as in the example of the cooler water, that only means that this particular diet or supplement was a little better than what the person did before.
Whether or not a paritcular diet or product is actually matching the biological design of the body is an entirely different question. If we want to eat in a way that brings forth true health and a good physical foundation for spiritual awakening, we should look beyond ways to just compensate a little better for the extreme nutrient deprivation of modern diets. What follows is a summary of three simple steps to a diet that truly nourishes the amazing original design of the human body. This apporach is tested on hundreds of people, from those who started out in poor physical condition to many who where already in excellent health. It never fails to improve health and well-being, even for those who are already on a very good diet and liefstyle and generally very healthy. This approach also awakens the body`s own instincts, so that with a little time, you will be able to know directly what is good for you. A truly healthy diet should ultimately evolve to a pleasurable way of eating unburdened by dietary dogma and concepts.
This threefold approach awakens the authentic instincts and intuition of the human body in such a powerful way that after a while your body`s messages will be the only authority you need to choose food wisely.

1. Green Smoothies

Discovered by Victoria Boutenko, author of “Green for Life”  (see www.rawfamily.org), green smoothies are one of the most powerful resources for greatly improved health for everybody, regardless of individual constitution or lifestyle. After some years on a complete raw food diet that had cured her family from serious illnesses, Victoria Boutenko experienced some dissatisfaction with the traditional raw food diet. She studiet the dietary habits of chimpanzees and found that our closest relatives in the mammalian kingdom eat a diet of 40-50% green leaves. Primates eat root vegetables only when greens are not available due to a drought. Greens are far more rich in minerals, trace elements, vitamins, enzymes and phytonutrients that other vegetables. The advantage that primates have over is however is the fact that they can chew with much more efficiency. A cute little chimp is strong enough to rip out a cardoor and strength translates into stronger chewing as well.
Some people digest salads well, others don`t digest them well. By blending greens, the nutrients that are locked in the fiber are released. This is superior to juicing, because a juicer just discards the fiber that stores so much of the nutrient value of greens. Victoria Boutenko discovered that greens blended with fruit and a little water is an ideal way of increasing one`s intake of greens. All the problems that some people have with raw foods are bypassed through blending. 

I have recommended to all my clients to make a green smoothie the first meal of the day everyday for three weeks. After that period, everybody without exception wants to keep eating the green smoothies. The benefits include a sense of being truly nourished on a cellular level that has eluded even most people who tried to well for years. Digestion improves and cravings for junk food dissipate. Healthy eating becomes more enjoyable and easy. Nobody believes how beneficial green smoothies are until they try them, the results are always surprising.

As a basic recipe, you can chop up fresh, organic greens (batavia, romaine, kale, parsley, anything that is dark green), fill the blender losely with it and add organic sweet fruit. Two bananas or one pear and one banana for one large head of lettuce might be a good balance for most people. You can of course experiement with any fruit you like.
Add water so the mixture will blend well, how much water is needed will depend on your blender. Do not use very cold water. No other ingredients should be added, especially no oils or starches. 3. Healthy Fats

Nothing could be further from the truth than the nutritional dogma that fats are bad for you. The wrong type of fats can easily kill you, even in small amounts. The right type of fats are necessary for delivering nutrients to the cells, being hydrated on a cellular level, transporting toxins out of the body, producing sufficient hormones and neurotransmitters and feeling emotionally balanced.

Freshly ground flax is more nutritious and balanced than the oil, but it should always be ground fresh. Other oils are best minimized.

Fats that are harmful are all heated plant oils, which includes most that are labeled “cold-pressed” and all products containing plant oil, unless they are specifically labeled raw. Margarine and all products containing hydrogenated fats should be minimized/avoided. If fat is needed for cooking/baking purposes, virgin coconut oil is the best choice.
